Our managing editor lives in Bristol and loves it. Just a short train ride from Bath and around two hours from London, the city has a strong reputation for being creative, progressive, and proudly inclusive. It’s just a few of the reasons why she chose to live there.
That spirit shows up not just in its politics, but in everyday places from cafés to bars, and businesses where LGBTQ+ people are welcomed. The following spaces are all either queer-owned or have publicly committed to being LGBTQ+ and trans-friendly, a meaningful stance, especially in light of growing anti-trans rhetoric and regressive legal changes elsewhere in the UK (and the US).
Where to Meet, Eat, and Unwind
Start your day at Café Kino in Stokes Croft. It’s a vegan, worker-owned café that’s long been popular with Bristol’s LGBTQ+ and activist communities. It’s calm, affordable, and inclusive. It’s the perfect place where you can grab a coffee, meet a friend, or catch a community event or film night.
For something quieter but just as welcoming, Small Street Espresso is a great option. It’s a queer-run café tucked away in the city centre, known for its excellent coffee and relaxed, respectful atmosphere.
If you’re looking for something more social, Left Handed Giant Brewpub at Finzels Reach is bright, open, and community-minded. While not queer-owned, it’s a proudly inclusive space that often hosts LGBTQ+ meetups and events but better yet, it’s right on the river and perfect for a pint in the sun.
For something a little more pampering, why not download Dooo, an app created by Jess Palfrey which promotes inclusivity by providing genderless haircuts on demand. Or head to Buff Bar (a queer-owned nail bar)
And if you’re more into live performance than parties, check out The Wardrobe Theatre in Old Market. It’s known for programming original, often queer-led productions, from playful drag shows to thoughtful, small-scale storytelling. Over at Watershed, you’ll find film screenings and talks that consistently highlight LGBTQ+ voices and perspectives, all in a friendly, open-minded setting.
The Heart of Bristol’s Queer Nightlife: Old Market
When evening comes, head to Old Market, home to a cluster of venues that are proudly LGBTQ+ focused. Here, queer nightlife isn’t just a monthly theme but it’s the default.
Start with a drink at The Phoenix, a queer-owned pub with a big beer garden, friendly staff, and regular events, from indie nights to drag shows, plus it’s dog friendly! Next door, Bristol Bear Bar caters to the bear community, but everyone’s welcome. It’s friendly, unpretentious, and a vital part of the scene.
Looking to dance? Queenshilling is one of Bristol’s longest-running LGBTQ+ clubs and remains a popular spot for its inclusive dancefloor and drag karaoke. OMG, just down the road, offers a louder, busier night out for anyone who wants cocktails and pop bangers.
For a more alternative vibe, venues like Strange Brew and Lost Horizon regularly host queer-led events, including art shows, live drag, and parties like MISSCOTEQUE, which channels the energy of 80s lesbian discos with modern flair.
Why Visibility Matters
In a climate where trans rights are under attack and queer people still face discrimination, visibility and affirmation matter. Every venue on this list is either owned by queer people or has publicly declared itself an LGBTQ+ safe space. That commitment creates tangible safety and joy for people who need it most.
Whether you’re here for a weekend or call Bristol home, these spaces offer something more than just food or drinks. They offer a place to belong.
