A while back, we shared seven real experiences from our Fat Girls Traveling community about what it’s like to ask for a seatbelt extender. That post continues to be one of our most popular, because it speaks to something so many of us experience but, not enough people talk about.
We wanted to revisit that conversation, but we’re including tips to make the process easier for you this time. Whether it’s your first flight or your fiftieth, asking for a seatbelt extender can bring up a lot of emotions. You deserve to fly safely and comfortably, and we’re here to help!
1. You’re Not Alone
It might feel like all eyes are on you, but requesting a seatbelt extender is incredibly common. Flight attendants are trained to handle these requests. You are not the first person to ask, and you won’t be the last.
2. Ask For Seatbelt Extender Early if It Helps

If you’re feeling anxious, asking for an extender when you board or before takeoff can give you peace of mind. Some people prefer to get settled first, but it’s okay to be proactive if that eases your nerves.
3. A Quiet Ask is Absolutely Fine
You don’t need to announce it. You can simply ask a flight attendant discreetly when they pass by. Most crew members will handle the request professionally and quietly.
4. Advocate for Yourself
While many flight attendants are kind and helpful, there are occasional moments when you might encounter rudeness or discomfort. Remember: needing a seatbelt extender is not shameful. You are entitled to fly safely, and it’s their job to assist you.
5. Practice What You’ll Say
Sometimes the hardest part is getting the words out. Rehearsing a simple, clear sentence can help:
“Hi, can I please have a seatbelt extender?” You don’t need to apologize or explain. A polite, direct ask is enough.
6. Remember You Deserve Comfort
You are not an inconvenience. Airplanes are designed with a very narrow standard of bodies in mind — but that’s not your fault. You have every right to travel safely and comfortably, just like anyone else.
7. Lean on Community Support
One of the best things about the Fat Girls Traveling Network is knowing you’re not alone. If you’re nervous about an upcoming flight, share your feelings in the group. You’ll find encouragement, support, and maybe even a few new tips from people who understand.
