Black-Owned Hotels to Book for Your Next Vacation

It’s Black History Month, but you can book one of these Black-Owned Hotels for your next vacation as a way to celebrate Black History 365 days of the year. Last year I promised to center Black narratives and feature Black businesses all year long. I’m even more committed to doing so this year.

Although I haven’t stayed at any of these hotels yet, they are all on my list. Most are privately owned by husband and wife teams and life partners. Here’s a brief look at Black-owned hotels you should book and why.

Perfect For Solo Travelers

Akwaaba Mansion

Brooklyn, New York

If you’re traveling to NYC stay at Akwaaba Bed & Breakfast Inn in Brooklyn. This Afrocentric B&B is just a 15-minute subway ride from Manhattan. Choose between 4 guest rooms in this 1860s mansion with 14-foot ceilings, ornate fireplaces, and jacuzzis. Start your day with a Southern-style breakfast including chicken and waffles and fish and grits. Then explore the beautiful property and its secluded garden and courtyard.


LGBTQIA+ Friendly

Blue Apple Beach

Tierra Bomba Island, Colombia

Blue Apple Beach is a female-founded boutique hotel 30 minutes off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia. You’ll find this 10 room boutique hotel and beach club on the shore of Tierra Bomba Island. Guests have access to two pools, an outdoor lounge, the beach, and a restaurant as well as bi-monthly LGBTQ+ parties. We were happy to learn that diversity extends to the hotel’s management team.

Jnane Tamsna

Marrakesh, Morocco

The only Black woman-owned hotel in Morocco is perfect for those with impeccable taste. Jnane Tamsna has 24 rooms spread across five houses, five pools, a tennis court, a private villa, a restaurant and a private villa and a nine-acre garden. The property mixes elements of traditional and modern Moorish design. Paying homage to traditional North African and Arabic styles, with handcrafted wood furniture, African art, colorful textiles and prints.

Jnane Tamsna offers a range of activities for a variety of travelers. There’s a guided bike tour of the majestic Atlas Mountains to cooking classes for adults. As well as magic classes and traditional Arabic calligraphy classes for kids!

The Oak Bluffs Inn

Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Since the 1950’s Martha’s Vineyard has been a place of respite for the Black community. The historic Oak Bluffs beach also known as The Inkwell is so beloved there’s a movie about it. Less than a 10 minute walk away you’ll find The Oak Bluffs Inn. This 10-room Victorian inn is perfect for a group trip. Everyone has a private place to retreat to as well as plenty of common space to connect.

The Oak Bluffs Inn is walking distance from local of farm-to-table restaurants and a short bike ride away from three beaches, and steps away from historic stops on the African-American Heritage Trail.


Perfect for Music Lovers

Urban Cowboy Hotel

Nashville, Tennessee

In Music City you’ll find an adults-only boutique hotel housed in a historic Victorian mansion. Located less than ten minutes from downtown Nashville, Urban Cowboy Nashville has eight suites, a Public House Bar with award-winning pizza, and a Parlor Bar. Grab a glass of wine while listening to live music and watching the sunset from the hotel’s garden. Then retire to the Penthouse which features a 14-foot headboard and a 72-inch clawfoot bathtub.
