The second annual Philly FatCon is happening October 18-20, 2024, and here’s why you should get tickets! This is the largest event on the East Coast created for fat folks by fat folks. They’ve created a judgment-free space for fat people while demonstrating a commitment to diversity, inclusivity. This is one of the reasons why we’re a proud sponsor of Philly FatCon 2024!
This fat-positive event will be held at William Way LGBT Community Center, an ADA-compliant facility. Philly FatCon believes that diverse voices need to be heard. So their speakers and panelists are Black, POC, Disabled, LGBTQIA+, and those who represent diversity of religion/belief and national origin.
We love that Philly FatCon pays all of the speakers, moderators, panelists, instructors, and performers who participate in the event. We agree that fat people deserve to be compensated for their expertise, time, and skill.
Fat Girls Guide: This is the second Philly FatCon, what’s new this year?
Philly FatCon: We’re in a more central location this year, right in Center City, Philadelphia, and found a great hotel nearby with a really reasonable rate. We were excited to offer that convenient option for our attendees. Our costume party will also be bigger this year! We’ll have a comedian this year in addition to fat burlesque performances and a live DJ.
FGG: Why is Philly FatCon important for the local and global fat community?
PFC: When we founded Philly FatCon, we wanted it to elevate and celebrate fat people doing great things and to give everyone a sense of belonging. Philly FatCon provides a space to connect with others and know you’re not alone in this world.
FGG: Who are some of the speakers, vendors, special guests, and new topics?
PFC: We have several new topics this year: Fat Bodies in Art and Literature, Fornicating While Fat (all about sexuality, pleasure, and relationships), Filmed While Fat (this is with the stars of the Thick Skin documentary), and we’re bringing back Fat Fashion. This year several designers, pattern makers, and others in the fashion space will talk about designing clothes for fat bodies. We’re so happy to also host a special interactive workshop with NAAFA and executive director, Tigress Osbourne will be joining us. Our keynote speaker is Roz “The Diva” Mays and she will give a keynote address on overcoming gym-intimidation.
FGG: Who are the humans behind Philly FatCon?
PFC: We are Donnelle, Adrienne, and Kenyetta! If you see us, say hi!
Philly FatCon began with an idea in November of 2022 when Donnelle Jageman, Adrienne Ray, and Kenyetta Harris met at The Philly Plus Swap. The group was inspired by the energy at the event and the need for fat community. Read about Philly FatCon 2023 here.
FGG: What are the Top Things To Do in Philly during Philly FatCon?
PFC: There are a few ways to attend, you can get an All Access Pass or purchase tickets for the individual events. The Welcome Party is on Friday evening, so during the day you can see City Hall, Rittenhouse Square (go to 1-900 Ice Cream), shop on Walnut Street, and Reading Terminal Market. This is also a good option after the clothing swap on Sunday.
Foodies will love: Middle Child, Bud & Marilyn’s, Vedge (Vegan), Sampan, Grandma’s Philly, Double Knot, El Vez, and Goldie. All of these are delicious and extremely popular so we suggest you make reservations.
If you’re looking for some nightlife after the Welcome Party on Friday, we suggest you check out Woody’s, Franky Bradley’s, or Charlie was a Sinner.
There is a lunch break on Saturday and a few nearby spots we’d suggest are sushi at Double Knot, Korean food at one of three places within walking distance, and vegan options at Hip City Veg or Monster Vegan.
